About

Sum

Two, four, nine modules? Whatever the number, the sum is as follows: a well-proportioned sofa design that stands as the epitome of contemporary elegance. Sum is the name of Normann Copenhagen’s take on a light modular sofa, which has the same complete appearance, whether it is set up in a two-seater version or as a several metre long lounge dream.

The design is stringent and focused, but invitingly open in character: elegant and resolute as a wingspread stretching out into the air, the sofa spreads out its armrests and invites you into its soft and homely space. Slim, angled legs lift it from the floor in a delicate counterpoint to the generous contours of the back and armrest. Sum’s contrasting design facets are framed by a harmonious modular concept. In a seemingly effortless flow, the lines of the modules meet and merge into an integrated whole. Also the rear has been taken into consideration, so the sofa can stand in the middle of a room and delight the eye from all angles.

The Sum sofa can be built up from eight different modules, angled or straight, with open or closed sides. Add up the parts you want into a customised sofa design and create welcoming and vibrant lounge areas, supplemented by the series’ matching armchair.

Simon Legald graduated from The Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in the summer of 2012. His work consists of both small- and large scale products. Simon's designs are often created in a dialogue between craftsmanship and industry. He also likes to incorporate the techniques that are necessary for the structure of a product into the design by highlighting them visually.

"Honesty is what makes a product understandable and is what describes the products functionality. If you understand the product, it does not need any explanation. The essence of my design is for it to be bought and used. Therefore, it has to satisfy not only the functional aspects, but also the psychological and aesthetic needs. For me simplicity describes the true identity of objects and makes them trustworthy. In my design, I try not to add any unnecessary details. I work with simplicity by highlighting the necessities instead of hiding them. It gives the product a simple and honest expression."
