The Story of Hemp in the Mat Chair

Normann Copenhagen’s CTO, Søren Stryhn Petersen, recently visited France to secure the hemp fibres needed for our Mat Chair - a design that challenges conventional materials in furniture production. Normann Copenhagen took a bold step into uncharted territory, by embracing the unconventional material of hemp to craft furniture.

The Challenges of Hemp Production 

While more traditional materials such as steel and plastic are readily available, the usage of hemp requires a more hands-on approach given its limited use in furniture production, and more importantly that we must actively ensure access to high-quality fibers that meet our strict requirements in terms of quality. Hemp, with its natural and durable qualities, is in many ways an ideal choice, however working with it is far from straightforward.

Hemp cultivation focuses on three primary outputs: 

1. seeds (used in food products)

2. shives (for construction or animal bedding)

3. and fibers (mainly for textiles and insulation)
   
   

Our specific requirement—a light, decorative fiber blend—is not a standard product, making procurement even more complex, as most fibers are produced for larger-volume industries like textiles. Hemp is also a seasonal crop, harvested only once a year in late summer. This necessitates long-term agreements to ensure a consistent supply for our chairs.

The Natural Beauty of Hemp
In France, where we source our hemp, processing facilities are well-established. As with any natural crop, weather conditions play a crucial role in shaping each season’s harvest. Variations in rainfall and temperature can influence plant growth, leading to differences in fiber characteristics.

These seasonal fluctuations are a normal part of working with natural materials, and our close collaboration with trusted producers ensures a stable supply that meets our standards.

Additionally, variations in fiber color—caused by differences in fields or harvest dates—mean no two Mat Chairs are ever exactly alike. While we strive for consistency, this uniqueness is a hallmark of using natural materials, reinforcing their beauty and individuality.
